Vehicle Entry Restricted in Delhi’s Connaught Place, February Onwards
Electric Vehicles and Cycles are Permitted
Delhi’s Connaught Place is one of the largest financial, commercial and business centres in the city. Now, a new rule has been passed that will have a major impact. From February 2017, all vehicles with internal combustion engine won’t be allowed to enter middle and inner circles of Connaught Place. The aforementioned areas will come under exclusive pedestrian zone for a period of three months. The motive for this step is to decongest the area from thousands of vehicle that the market attracts each day.
This plan was passed as a pilot project on 5th January 2017 after a meeting headed by Venkaiah Naidu, union urban development minister. People who wish to visit Cannought Place market will have to park their vehicles in designated parking areas in Palika, Shivaji Stadium, and Baba Kharak Singh Marg. From there, they can hop on to free shuttle service that will drop them at CP. The parking capacity of these parking spots is 3,172 cars, and presently, around 1088 cars on average are utisiling them.
That said, cyles and electric vehicles are allowed to enter the restricted areas. No need to worry if you own Mahindra Electric E2OPlus. The long-term thinking behind this is to free up enough area and make CP a happening place, with street cafes, sound and light shows, public plazas and street festivals.Making CP Market pedestrian friendly also comes under NDMC’s ‘Smart City’ project. NDMC Chairman, Naresh Kumar has assured Naidu that the results of ‘Smart City’ project will be evident in around five months.
