What are Ingenium Engines?

These new Jaguar-Land Rover Ingenium series engines are developed in-house at the company’s Whitley and Gaydon facility specifically to allow a wide range of flexibility for future technologies. What do we mean by future technology? Well, the Ingenium engines are supposedly 80kg per unit lighter than current engines. Thanks to the use of ‘state-of-the-art turbochargers’, there is increased amount of low down torque. And following the Henry Ford’s code, the components can be shared between diesel, petrol and hybrid-electric engines. Land Rover is clearly planing ahead for the hybrid cars in future.

Currently Offered Engines

Presently, the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport is powered by 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine comes in two tunes- 200PS and 240PS. Similarly, the diesel engine also gets two tunes- 150PS and 190PS.

Ingenium Engine’s Power Output

Now, the 2018 models will get a significant bump in power. The petrol 2.0-litre Ingenium engine will make 290PS of power and 400Nm of torque. While the diesel Ingenium engine will churn out 240PS of power and 340Nm of torque. The vehicles will continue to use the 9-Speed automatic gearbox. The increased power doesn’t translate to decreased fuel economy in case of Ingenium engines. The company claims that in the 2018 Evoque, the fuel economy will be 15% improved.

Competition

The Discovery Sport and Evoque compete with cars like Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, and Volvo XC60. All the aforementioned cars are the latest offering from their respective manufacturers. This Ingenium engine update by Land Rover should give them some serious edge. Further, the company recently started importing Evoque and Discovery Sport via CKD Route and reduced prices for both the models in India (Read about it here)
