Maruti Cars to get more fuel efficient with new 6-Speed Gearbox

Maruti Suzuki dominates the car industry in India when it comes to sales numbers. One reasoning for that is their fuel efficiency. To double down on its strength, Maruti Suzuki is working to make their models more fuel efficient by introducing a new six-speed manual gearbox.

Presently, all Maruti Suzuki models comes fitted with 5-Speed manual gearbox. Now, the new ‘MF30’ transmission is set to replace this unit. The extra 6th gear on this new gearbox is tall geared and this will allow the car to cruise at highway speed while still maintaining lower engine rpm. Along with reduced fuel consumption, the engine will also run quieter thereby increasing the comfort levels.

The exact timeline of the company to introduce this new 6-Speed gearbox in not confirmed yet. However, some reports suggests that the latest Maruti Swift will be the first model to get this MF30 gearbox. It should also be noted that Maruti is in works to launch the facelifted Ertiga and Ciaz soon, so these could also be the vehicle of choice to launch the new gearbox. A few months back we spotted a Ciaz test mule. This makes us thing if it was the platform to test the new 6-Speed gearbox. (Read about spied Ciaz test mule)

Maruti Suzuki has previously also used an example of 6-Speed gearbox in discontinued models like Kizashi and 1.6-litre S-Cross 320. The 6-Speed transmission in these two model was tuned to offer spirited driving experience rather that outright efficiency.
